Hi,
a suggestion:

can /etc be a rw in ram? Then we can make changes in
ram, issue restart as in '/etc/init.d/networking
restart'. If successful, then we sync the /etc in ram
with /etc on disk (/ro/etc?) if we want the changes to
be made permanent.

If it fails, watchdog will then reboot the system
after the configured time, returing the system to the
previous working state.

I hope I have made myself clear.
