I think the systems logs are one place this data is kept, at least for
some time. Probably there are others.
There is a small, neat little python tool called denyhosts (you can
apt-get it) that tracks that value for ssh side as well, and also
provides some ability to limit retries on brute force attacks, which can
be kind of handy.
