I got past the boot issue by choosing to use LiLo as boot loader, thanks to
Matt for posting this workaround.

Is there any other text editor than vi in the default program base?

As soon as I try to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file with vi over the
serial connection I get screen full of garble. I can't ssh into the box
until I've set the network details to match my network.

I use GtkTerm as serial terminal, but have seen some issues with screen
refreshes etc, I wonder if there's some other terminal emulator that would
be easy to try out?..
