I have very good results (so far) with madwifi 0.9.4 (with any  
sensitivity patch 2) on adhoc mode + minstrel rate:

To activate the minstrel rate algorithm on Voyage/Debian, just modify  
your /etc/modprobe.d/madwifi to include this:

options ath_pci autocreate=none ratectl=minstrel
