I've seen a related problem. There was an incompatibility with one of the
VMware virtual SCSI adapters and the driver in some versions of Linux.
The workarounds were to boot from IDE, or when making the Virtual Machine to
specify a custom set up and to select the LSI Logic SCSI rather than BusLogic
SCSI (I think). One worked with OpenSuse9 and the other one didn't. If you
don't use the custom configuration for the VMware guest, you don't get the
option to choose the type of SCSI adapter.
