A simple one, but when you partitioned, did you make your root partition
bootable? In fdisk, should look something like this:

   Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1   *           1         131      503533   83  Linux
/dev/hda2             132        1018     3409628   83  Linux
