Just to add a 'me too'...
I'm using a USB cardreader to install on 1GB and 2GB CF cards for
Soekris net4801s. I've found that the grub boot sector isn't being
written to the cards if the boot partition is too big.
For example, a 2GB partition on a 2GB card won't boot, but using a 512MB
partition on the same card works. The first 512 bytes of the device
contain the word "GRUB" if it has worked.
Hope this helps someone find the cause of the problem.
