My problem was the ownership of /var. I followed the instructions from Carla 
Schroder's article, which started with tar --numeric-owner -jxf 
voyage-0.4.1.tar.bz2. I did this as a user which ended up by me owner the 
whole tree. Ssh objected to the ownership. I went back and redid it as root, 
and now ssh comes up every time.
