you have set PIN and maybe USER and PASS in the conninfo.ini (don't 
forget to remove the # in front)? 

you can also connect with socat tool to send yourself AT commands. very 
usfull list of AT commands can be found here:
http://www.shapeshifter.se/2008/04/30/list-of-at-commands/

this ones might help:
AT+CSQ=? : check signal quality
AT+COPS=? : show available network operators

and what antenna have you connected?

if one or more leds are on: try to "modprobe -r" these 3 modules or 
blacklist them with a  /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist entry
