Hi Ian,

Since you don't mention running AP mode or STA mode, I suppose you are 
talking about STA.  I follow exactly the same the wiki page described 
and I can use wpa_supplicant on voyage 0.6.1 (pre) to connect to 
associate to my home server running hostapd w/ WPA.

Here is my wpa_supplicant config:

voyage:~# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
        ssid="voyage-wds"
        psk=76ab47787aa8b560895f617dd351ad9d32faa86232f5366b6554832073d07481
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    proto=WPA
#   proto=RSN
}
