Yes the buffers line from free -m shows the amount of memory used.

voyage:~# free -m
              total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:           123        116          7          0          0         43
-/+ buffers/cache:         72         51
Swap:            0          0          0

Just to be perfectly clear - given your example above, does
the system currently have 51 MB free, or 58 MB (51 + 7) free?
