D-Link DNS-323 and a DNS-343 with cifs (usually for tcpdump pcap files).
 The package you are missing is smbfs.

First make the root fs writable with "remountrw".  If you have not
installed any software with apt now would be a good time to update with:
aptitude update

Then install the smbfs package:
aptitude install smbfs

My syntax looks like this:
mount -t cifs //host/share /mount/dir -o username=myuser
though your syntax should work as well.
