Just in case someone has not mentioned this before, I also get the same error
"can't read the root file system", when I was trying to upgrade some PC104 boards
from 5.2 to 6.0 & 6.1.  I could load the live-cd with no problem, and do the install.
But after that I could not properly boot the devices.  I tried using CF cards as 
well as external HD's. No problems formatting the CF or HD's...

Everything works fine under 5.2.
