Unfortunatly our conversation was accidentally off-the-list. Here is Thorsten's solution without shorewall.net - using iptables...

Darsha your hint was excellent. I searched for TCPMSS and find that
target. With the following rule on the router all pages are routed now:
`iptables -A FORWARD -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu'
Note the rule has to be the first forward rule!
