Hey Hermann!!

I've just had time to site and try your approach, it appears to work very
well!!!! I still have some testing to do but everything looks to work very
nicely.

Thank you!

Rob

Hi Rob,

I do this the following way:

in '/etc/inittab':

#-- pppd begin
D0:2345:respawn:/usr/sbin/pppd nodetach call dsl-provider
#-- pppd end

in /etc/network/interfaces:

# interface to DSL
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
  address 1.1.1.1
  netmask 255.255.255.255
  broadcast 1.1.1.255

and no ppp interface here.

This work's well on several devices here.

For timesync you can create a script in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ which are executed
every time a ppp connection is established.

regards,
 Hermann

Hello Guys,

There seem to be a lot of network related questions on the list recently,
thought I'd add another one ;-)

I've got a ppp script configured on the system which connects just fine with
'pon' and likewise disconnects with 'poff'. I'm now looking to have the
system treat it like the Ethernet, bringing ppp0 up when the system boots
and then maintain that connection if it is dropped.

What would you suggest is the best way to go about this? I've added the ppp0
as an interface to /etc/network/interfaces like so:

auto ppp0

iface ppp0 inet ppp

  provider three

with 'three' being the name of the ppp dialer that I'm looking to use.
However when I run 'ifconfig ppp0 up' I simply get an error message which
says: 'ppp0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device' and if I
restart networking I get an error like so:

voyage:~# /etc/init.d/networking restart

Reconfiguring network interfaces...if-up.d/mountnfs[eth0]: waiting for
interface ppp0 before doing NFS mounts (warning).

/lib/udev/hotplug.functions: line 10: [: : integer expression expected

/lib/udev/hotplug.functions: line 10: [: : integer expression expected

done.

I'd appreciate your thoughts guys, let me know how you would go about doing
this, like I say, I want to bring the connection up as early as possible in
the boot and then ensure it is maintained and reconnected if dropped.

Also, getting the system to do a timesync once connection is made would also
be good so the system has the latest time, in the same was it does when
connecting over Ethernet.

Cheers,

Rob
