thanks for the ideas. I bought the barenones version of the Foxconn
box with no hard drive. I am running voyage-0.6.5 on a USB flash
drive.
The heat problem is caused by the case lid completely blocking the
fan's only input. Running with CPU at idle the fan still runs full
speed. It's a case design flaw. If they placed a vent in the lid
directly over the fan this would not be a problem. As is, I'm
concerned the heat will severly shorten the life of this box.
I have also tried the broadcom-CPU boards you mentioned like ALIX but
I need more horsepower for content filltering (not just URL
filtering). I may need to build my own boxes for this project (a few
hundred) using an ATOM board and a more sensible case. I was trying
to find something off-the-shelf under $200 USD and avoid the project
delays of building each box. The Foxconn would have been perfect.
Back to the drawing board...
