Thanks for the advice. I tried lilo and got the same error. I remember catching a glimpse of something (possibly the verification part of the install script) that said something to the effect of filesystem label= 
Which I wouldn't know where to fix that.  Once I have a chance I'll switch out the hd for the CF in the desktop and hopefully the disk assignment will make sense when it's switched back to the thin client

I used to get this error with Grub when using a USB to CF
multi-reader, I now use lilo instead as this works 100% of the time.
Grub works for me if I use a PCMCIA to CF reader.
