Don't forget to run remountrw before doing an apt-get update.  Your file
system needs to be writable before you update the apt database or add
applications.

You should be able to add nano, though I prefer vi(m).  To be fair I use
vim nearly every day.

When you get the time, it is probably a good idea to test the CF card
from your Ubuntu install:

sudo fsck.ext2 -c -f -v /dev/<device id>

FYI, CF cards do wear out over time. Just because it used to work fine
in your camera, does not mean that it is not now in fact dying.
