I commented out the serial port enable in lilo.conf and that cured the
double characters. The serial port is already enabled in the BIOS so
enabling it again in lilo causes the doubling of the characters.

I added ide-core.nodma=0.0 and =0.1 and I also added irqpoll which I found
that someone else had used.
None of these made any difference in the lost interrupt problems with the
HD installed.
I am not sure what to try next.
