What I do is add a partition in the unused space which I then add an
entry in /etc/fstab so that it is always mounted. Generally I format
this partition as ext2 on CF/USB flash media, and ext3 for USB HD. For
write intensive applications external 2.5" bus powered USB hard drives
work well.
