The main purpose was to know during install/upgrade that we're
messing with the right partition.  The version adds marginally more info,
in case such a distinction becomes useful.  I have 2 CFs, so could
maybe end up with 2 different versions on them, and one of them is 4GB,
and could readily hold a 2nd partition with another version, or with _ONE
or _MPD.

that said, I have no actual need for it now, and will drop the version
when I rework the patch to clean up the multiple ROOT_LBL assignments.
