The system is Intel Atom US15W based.
Cardbus was irrelevant, the CF is attached to the COMe IDE bus.
modprobe pata_sch loads the proper driver and the CF is accessible.

Kernel config:
  config PATA_SCH
	tristate "Intel SCH PATA support"
	depends on PCI
	help
	  This option enables support for Intel SCH PATA on the Intel
	  SCH (US15W, US15L, UL11L) series host controllers.
