You are correct....

I had this problem once before....

You actually need to add the name server to the resolvconf program. NOT THE
RESOLVCONF FILE, as this gets overwritten. I believe you add the IP address
and hostname to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/original or
/etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail.

To be 100% sure, google resolvconf and debian squeeze.
