It is not strange if if the storage is soldered directly to the the
board. It sounds like you have never played with embedded devices
where kilobytes still matter.
Look there are two very different perspectives here. I have to agree
with Adrian, less is better. 10 MB may not seem like much to you, but
to me an increase of 10 MB of code is 10 more MB that I have
patch/update and audit, on every system. Some of my systems are in
very remote areas with low bandwidth (sometimes sporadic access to the
internet).
Another solution (beyond splitting voyage into yet another variant)
would be to create a virtual package. Ubuntu does this with gnome and
kde, allowing you install everything that you might need for that
given environment. Say "apt-get install voyage-gnome-desktop" or
something similar.
I personally don't get why you would want to use voyage for a desktop
system, there are so many awesome distros aimed at this market. Where
voyage really shines for me is how well it scales down, while still
preserving a functional Debian system. The added drivers for the Alix
and Soekris specific hardware (like the LEDs) are also nice, but not a
deal breaker.
