In your OP, you did not mention that you were working with a 3.7.1.
What is the need for the 3.7.1 kernel? Specific hardware driver not
found in the VL default kernel?

No need to download the source, simply switch to the VL kernel and see
if you can make any progress with NAT.
If 3.7.1 is a must for you, then at a minimum get the .config file for
VL's default kernel and import it's setting for your 3.7.1 and then
build the kernel.
