The file would be generated with with the first 'echo', I tend an not
use the distribution-managed files for my own settings as this might
come with annoying questions about changed files on upgrade.

local.conf should be fine. If your system starts or not highly depends
if this is your actualy problem at all.

This is what I would do if I had no clue on what my system actually
loaded.
Another possibility would be to run 'lsmod' while the drivers are loaded
and just get the correct one from there. Remember to strip off the
'.ko'.
