Hostapd had been very reliable since I first used (I think it was 0.3.7?).  The author, Jouni Malinen, is also very 
accountable as well.  If this is really critical, he should have address it immediately.  Right now 2.1 is still the 
latest version since Feb. I searched though the mailing list , which I also subscribe to, and does not found any about

wpa_supplicant does not started until you define wpa_supplicant connection in /etc/network/interfaces.

My recommendation is to test it if you are in doubt.  (I really don't like the FUD hype.)  I run voyage's hostapd 2.1 
using 802.11 a/n 5GHz for a month without problem.  I have another box which run bridge + wpa_supplicant + hostapd.  I 
will upgrade this box to 2.1 to check if this the problem would exist too.
