There has been problem for SD card controller.  Not sure if this is related:

However, I don't have your problem using both mSATA and SD when using 4.1.6.

And thank you for your patch.  Will probably apply to later kernel > 4.1.6 (If I still have spare time).   4.1.6 has 
been frozen for a few months and I am not going to update it.
