Yes, getting rid of the LLIILLOO was an unexpected benefit of Grub.

I'd be happy to help on this. However, with full time work and a 6
week old baby, I don't have heaps of spare time.

I will also mention that I have an extreme dislike of programming in
Bash shell script. I realise that it is the most portable option, but
what about an 'advanced installer' option written in Python?  I'm much
more likely to actually do that.  :-)
