Jeff,
In able to have a OLSR Mesh Network, you need to have the olsrd
software daemon installed on every node. OLSR is a layer3 mesh
protocol, it runs at the IP Layer, so you can configure it to run on
top of any L2 interface/frequency, like 802.11g, 802.11a or US 900
Mhz. In a typical 2-Radio Mesh deployment, each node talks 2.4 ghz
with the clients (standard AP Mode) and talks 2.4ghz or 5 ghz (Adhoc)
to the other nodes (this is what I call the backhaul). You'll need
the olsrd daemon running on the backhaul interface.
