It seems this WAS my problem. I went through the installation
instructions without extLinux, for the most part. I was unable to get
ahold of the source for the kernel with embedded USB support so I had to
omit those steps. From the startup, it *looks* like this is included
anyway, but I haven't tested it at all.

For the record, here are my goals:

* Main goal - small (wired) firewall/NAT/router
* Would like to provide DNS, DHCP
* Would be nice if machine were running iptables, as I mostly understand
that.
* Would also be nice to have a web-based admin interface - webmin?
* Get rid of the /ro and /rw stuff, and
* Have all logging go to USB thumb drive; everything else should remain
static and RO on the CF card.

Eventually it would be nice to add wireless capability, but I'm not
ready for that now.

Thoughts, suggestions, and pointers are welcome. I know there are
occasionally some significant gaps in my knowledge, but I'm happy to learn.

  -Don
