[Voyage-linux] install x and a working window manager on the alix 3d3

Hi

I'd like to run a lightweight window manager on my alix box. I installed
xorg and openbox and I also tried xorg and wdm but I'm having a really hard
time getting X to run in a way that I can see something on my screen.

I managed to get a VGA screen by reconfiguring (dgpk-reconfigure
xserver-xorg) and selecting vga instead of vesa (that also means 640x480 and
8 bit) when I had just xorg and openbox installed. However, the resolution
and number of colors make this of little use.

When I vnc into such a setup, I get the window manager screen but cannot
right click to start something.

The situation is very much the same with wdm, except that in this case when
I vnc into the box I get a terminal and can start installers that have a GUI
(my main reason for having x in the first place)..

I figure the problem is X and not the window manager - voyage is my 3rd
linux I'm trying to install. I get the ready-made image of imedia linux to
work (no mouse though meaning it's of very little use, plus the partition
size cannot be expanded beyond 256mb), but both the imedia installation and
xubuntu installation from CD abort after the first one or two screens,
hinting that it's not so easy to get the Alix to show something on screen
(just for good measure I attached the box to two different traditional VGA
screens so as to rule out that there's an issue with my TFT display).

So, I'm wondering, has anybody managed to get x working locally and properly
at a decent resolution? If so, would you mind sharing your X11.conf and if
you did anything special besides installing the abovementioned packages it
would also be good to know.

Thanks in advance
Stephan
