I had the same issue, I installed Dante Socks5 proxy last week
 and it works just fine.
Easy to configure, works on everything (I use it mainly for IRC DCC)
no caching and low CPU (15% CPU load on same Alix running at full speed 5Mb/s).

apt-get install dante-server
