I added a 2.5" HDD to my alix 2c3 that used to run from CF.
It managed to get it to work, perhaps by tinkering with the jumpers
and/or the bios settings, but alas it lasted less than a week; after that
the CF volume started showing fs errors and became completely unreadable soon 
thereafter.
Note: not corrupted, plain inaccessible. Burnt probably.

I don't recommend repeating the experiment, expecially because I had no 
backup. :-)
