I use madwifi.
I also use the stable 5.x branch of voyage since there are still some
problems with the 0.6.1 version of madwifi.

For one one throughput is much lower with 0.6.1 (300KiB vs 3MiB on the
same hardware between the versions of voyage. Also under heavy load the
0.6.1 version reboots regardless of the frequency used.

Never tried it. I remember that in November there were a number of
known issues with master mode and that some did even consider it ready
for testing yet. Things may have changed, but that is a little too
bleeding edge for my taste.

 auto ath0
iface ath0 inet manual
pre-up wlanconfig ath0 destroy || true
pre-up wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode ap
post-down wlanconfig ath0 destroy
        up iwconfig ath0 essid my5ghzessid channel 64 rate 54M
up ip link set ath0 up

I then add this interface to the bridge interface and configure hostap
in the usual way.

You may wish to look at wikipedia for a list of channels as my example
uses 5.32 Ghz:

openWRT on x86 may work (the development version also suffers from
madwifi bugs), so again the stable kamikaze release may be more
appropriate.

You could buy a device preloaded, like some of the ubiquity gear
(ubnt.com), I believe they are also using the stable openwrt, but I have
not yet used any of their gear.

The routerboard gear also ships with their own OS preloaded on the SBCs.
