% vbetool dpms off

works here! But beware: you need to call "vbetool dpms on" to 
reactivate your display. (Moving your mouse or hitting the keyboard 
will not automatically turn it on.)

vbetool can "interact badly with X on some systems" so read the "man 
vbetool".
