[Voyage-linux] bringing an interface up when it becomes available

I'm willing to give dhcp3-client a try...could somebody please tell me 
what packages
I need to remove and install? Thus far, I removed the pump package and 
installed
the dhcp3-client package.

Now, /etc/init.d/networking fails; complains that /dev/shm/network 
doesn't exist.
