I never encountered this. I usually don't remove pump before installing
dhcp3-client, it works fine for me that way.

I need to remove and install? Thus far, I removed the pump package and
installed
the dhcp3-client package.
Now, /etc/init.d/networking fails; complains that /dev/shm/network
doesn't exist.
