[Voyage-linux] Problem mounting USB HDD

Pity about NTFS being such a problem with Linux seeing as most external USB drives are formatted that way.
I am not willing to reformat to FAT32 and go through the process of putting all the music back on the drive – it was a selection rather than a ‘copyall’ so I will persevere a little longer with this.
Punky – will have a look at the permissions under Windows although I already made all operations available to Everyone under Windows.
Gustin/Punky – is the ntfs-3g package any different or better-suited than the ntfs driver already on Voyage MPD?
John, thanks for the observations – seems the world of Linux has it’s own dark figures! Murdering his wife, huh…!! Shall format any further external drives to FAT32 – or have a look at a Linux fs format – another ‘to-do’ on the Linux adventure.
Thanks all
Derek

You could try the ntfs-3g package. It is a FUSE based solution so the performance is not great, though still way more than enough for streaming music (or 1080p videos for that matter).
You would likely have to mount it manually.

Hi Derek,
For NTFS you can't mount rw or it is unsupported. Linux guy just don't have the spec. on NTFS so write is dangerous.
Probably it is permission problem of your files on the disk, not MPD. So better change the file permission on windows machines and plug back again, or re-format your disk to FAT32.

Hi Punky - I can mount it manually. I realized it was mounting as read-only
so I hooked it up to a Windows machine and ran Chkdsk. After this it mounted
flawlessly - no errors - and showed up as rw. Not sure if that matters?
However, no matter what I do it will not list any songs when I run 'mpc
update'. Have tried changing permissions - says Operation not supported -
so I went into the USB HDD via Windows again and allowed everyone all
operations - still no joy.
One odd thing - when I ran chmod -R 777 it scrolled through every song on
the USB drive but when is "ls /var/lib/mpd/music/music" it seems to list
only the directories - could this have a bearing on why it won't update?
Or is all this a NTFS issue?? Is there a way round it?
Derek

Hi Derek,
So you can see the disk, perhaps you can try manual mount. One potential
problem i see is your disk is NTFS formatted instead of FAT32.

Punky
