yes i was running it as root. i think debootstrap would throw an error
if it's not run by root.  but the --numeric-owner was exactley the
problem! as i've tried it yet on another machine i'll have to check it
tomorrow at the office with an alix board to see if it was really "only"
that, but i suppose it was.
