Hi Fred,
If you run "lsmod", you should see tg3 is loaded. Run "dmesg | less " and walk through to somewhere around "tg3" you
will some error about loading the firmware.
To fix your issue,.
1. download firmware-linux-nonfree by command (remountrw first, of course):
wget
http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-linux-nonfree_0.35~bpo60+1_all.deb
2. then install it by:
dpkg -i firmware-linux-nonfree_0.35~bpo60+1_all.deb
3. reboot.
