Punky,
No, I used the provided tar.gz files and ran the voyage.update there. Then I created a tar of the updated drive (plus the programs we use) and untar it to the next system device. I started using the USB drives in the newer Soekris devices with the Trandsend ssd drives they sell; it was the only way I could get voyage to load as I did not have an adapter for the card to run the scripts directly.

Did you use unetbootin to create Live USB drive from Live CD?
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Then use voyage.update to install it to the harddrive.
