I started using the USB drives in the newer Soekris devices with the Trandsend ssd drives they sell; it was the only way I could get voyage to load as I did not have an adapter for the card to run the scripts directly.

steps I take to do installs now

I use the 8.5 live iso. I boot and install. I then mount the usb
thumbdrive and cp -rp the files over to the hd.

this works but is time consuming.

The issue at hand is fixing the grub install so you can boot from a
working usb img/drive and install to a drive on a device that has no
cdrom/dvd drive.

As it has been pointed out it seems grub fails to install from the usb
device correctly onto the internal harddrive.

Everything else is cp over like a normal install using the voyage.update
command.

So Punky and others the question is how to fix the grub install via the
script to work correctly.
