Hello everyone on the list;
I wanted to let you guys know what we (Inveneo http://
www.inveneo.org ) are doing with Voyage. We are a non-profit
organization that builds communications networks for remote
communities around the world that have no access to electricity and
phone lines. Our systems run of batteries that are charged by solar
and other types of generators. We establish WiFi links between the
various sites and run VoIP (voice over IP) on these links. We use
WRAP boards to establish the WiFi links which run a slightly modified
Voyage distro on them and use Asterisk ( http://www.asterisk.org ) to
provide the VoIP capabilities.
We completed two month ago our first installation in a remote region
of western Uganda (in the area of Fort Portal). Access to
communication can have a profound impact for these communities and I
want to thank all the people who have been working on this software
which in return enables us to create these networks.
If you're interested have a look at our web site ( http://
www.inveneo.org ), we have as well just today released our code base
and detailed instructions how others can build these networks.
If I could add one feature to the current distro, it would be a web
based configuration interface. If anyone on the list has any pointers
to start looking at, please me know and I'd be happy to pinch in with
some coding - as much as it is in my abilities.
Thanks and take care,
Mark
