Hi Mark!
My name is Pablo, and I think we have plenty of things in common!. I am
part of EHAS, a spanish non-profit institution, whose ultimate goal is
improving public (as in state run) health assistance services in rural
areas of Latin American countries, as well as any other developing
countries, through the use of modern communications and information
technology.
Basically we are working with several wireless technologies (HF, VHF),
and WiFi has been the last one to turn up for us.
For the moment we are running Soekris with pebble and Voyage, and also
with Asterisk to provide VoIP. This has been our initial development,
because now the next step is going to some challenguing things like: IP
Autoconfiguration, Multi-hop routing wireless protocol, QoS in IP layer
with maybe iproute2, power save schemes, etc. Besides we plan to migrate
this system to ARM since we also run our routers with solar energy, and
this is a very limiting factor because of the prices.
I also would like to thank the effort to Voyage, communities like this
allow us to do the work much easier and are a big motivation.
Related to Web Interface, there is a very nice one based on PHP called
WiFiAdmin http://wifiadmin.sourceforge.net/
Also I think Metrix distro has cracked a lot on it
http://metrix.net/support/dist/ so it is worth to have a look at it.
I checked WifiAdmin and there were two important limitations: Security
was not implemented and the changes did not remain saved after a reboot
(it is using iwconfig ... instead of saving the configuration properly
in /etc/network/interfaces). Let me know if you see something
interesting, because I am also interested on it and it could be an
important improvement for Voyage.
Well Mark, I will have a look at your Web Site and keep in touch,
because I think we can collaborate in some way.
Regards from Madrid:
Pablo
