Yes, a colleague of mine has seen something like this, and I've seen
some other bizarre behavior, like getting an immediate SIGHUP when
doing PPP, implying that the underlying device returned an error and
made PPPd give up and close it.
In both cases, we theorize that the firmware on the card is crashing
and rebooting.
Can you send me the results from starting microcom and running "ATI"?
I'd like to know your firmware revision relative to mine. Sorry, it's
not convenient for me to do my ATI right now. What you'll likely
discover is you have very old firmware. The latest firmware I could
find is U1_2_45, which is available from Lenovo's website. You need to
be in windows to install the firmware, which is not convenient on the
Alix. (I went some ways towards tearing apart the installer to try to
find the mechanism it uses and do it myself, but couldn't do it.)
Also, take a look at this document:
http://www.sierrawireless.com/resources/documents/support/2130617_Supported_AT_Command_Reference_Rev_2.1.pdf
In it you can see how to dump/clear the crash log from your modem. It
would be interesting to know if it is filling with details.
